Weather in the Val di Fassa
Snow, ice and cold but
with clear skies and lots of sunshine
Arriving in the Val
di Fassa in winter, perhaps just after a fresh fall
of snow, is a unique experience. You will find yourself
in the midst of an enchanted landscape that comes
straight out of a fairytale. The fir trees are laden
with snow, the peaks of the Dolomites seem to be
sprinkled with icing sugar and the all of the scenery
is pure white.
Consistent snowfalls
begin in November, although it is not unusual to
see the first flakes as early as September or October
and these can seem like heavy snow, especially at
higher altitudes. From November onwards, nighttime
temperatures at the bottom of the valley are stably
below zero. The three coldest months are December,
January and February; in this period, minimum temperatures
at the bottom of the valley can fall as low as -20°C,
going on to reach even lower levels at high altitudes.
On the coldest days the temperatures remain below
zero; this is the ideal climate for "cold lovers"
and winter sports enthusiasts. We should point out,
however, that the low level of humidity means that
the cold is much less biting than on the plains.
Therefore, -10°C in the Val di Fassa is much
more bearable than -1°C in the Po Valley.
During
the winter season, days pass without snowfalls meaning
that skiers are graced with clear skies and excellent
visibility that allow them to enjoy the breathtaking
scenery to the full.
Road travel in winter is guaranteed
by snowploughs although, in any case, we recommend
that you travel with winter equipment as chains
and antifreeze.
