Alternative Route from Bolzano to the Costalunga Pass and on to Vigo di Fassa

This is the shortest route from the motorway to the Val di Fassa

The Val d'Ega is a narrow valley which leads to Nova Levante from the Bolzano Nord exit of the A22 Brennero motorway. The road continues from Nova Levante as far as the Costalunga Pass, which is already in the municipality of Vigo di Fassa, for a total of 28 km. It is a further 9 km from the Costalunga Pass to Vigo di Fassa.

The first section of the Val d'Ega is rather characteristic, due to the road that winds through jagged rocks. A series of tunnels is being planned to lead from the motorway exit to the end of the more difficult section of the Val d'Ega. The first tunnel has already been completed. As you leave the Bolzano Nord motorway exit and turn right in the direction of Bolzano, you will find the roundabout that takes traffic into the new tunnel, just a few hundred metres away.

The route is as follows: take care on the first section after leaving the motorway since there are no signs for the Val di Fassa; instead the signs indicate the Costalunga Pass (Karerpass) and Nova Levante (Welschnofen). Then, once through the Val d'Ega, you will come to two small towns of Alto Adige: first Ponte Nova and then Nova Levante. This section of road between the Val d'Ega and Nova Levante is smooth with no particular hazards. Nova Levante is 1,300 metres above sea level and from here, it is necessary to make a further climb of 450 m. The road has a few hairpin bends but the surrounding countryside is so splendid that it is hard to think of anything else. In fact, if you have a few minutes to spare, we recommend that you stop a while at Lake Carezza. This lake is to be found in Latemar Forest, which, with its fairytale setting is the perfect backdrop to the lake itself. Lake Carezza is almost always emerald green in colour and, during the winter months, it completely freezes over. Once past Lake Carezza, the road to the pass is rather short. The section from the Costalunga Pass to Vigo di Fassa is not difficult; there are no sharp bends, just slightly curved sections. Estimated journey time from Bolzano Nord to Vigo di Fassa: 40-50 mins.
